When Innocent Blood is shed and Cries— The Debt of Injustice and the fall of Great Houses

Texts: 1 Samuel 22; 2 Samuel 21; 1 Kings 21; 2 Kings 9–10.

“When Blood Cries: The Debt of Injustice and the Fall of Great Houses”
Hear this word with sobriety:
There are sins that end with a man, and there are sins that outlive him.
There are actions buried in silence, and there are actions that cry before God.
Today, the soil of Nigeria—especially Plateau, Benue, Kwara, and Niger, Ondo States—is soaked with innocent blood.

Scripture:“The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. Genesis 4:10.”
Yoruba Wisdom: “Ẹ̀jẹ̀ ẹni kì í ṣe omi; ọjọ́ kan ni yóò bẹ̀bẹ̀.” - (The blood of the innocent is not water; one day it will cry for justice.)

1. The Crime: When Power fails to Protect:
Saul killed the priests:
‘’So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck the priests, and killed on that day eighty-five men who wore a linen ephod. 19 Also Nob, the city of the priests, he struck with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and nursing infants, oxen and donkeys and sheep—with the edge of the sword.”
 1 Samuel 22:18-19.
 Ahab killed Naboth:
Naboth has blasphemed God and the king!” Then they took him outside the city and stoned him with stones, so that he died. 14 Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned and is dead.” 1 Kings 21:13-14.

Today:
• The innocent are slaughtered
• Communities are left exposed
• Protection is weak or absent
Scripture:

“And look! The tears of the oppressed, but they have no comforter—
 On the side of their oppressors there is power, But they have no comforter.” Ecclesiastes 4:1.
When power does not protect life, it becomes a participant in its destruction.
Yoruba Wisdom: “Adájọ́ tí kò dájọ́, aláṣẹ burúkú ni.” (A judge who does not deliver justice is a wicked ruler.)
Truth: When power does not protect life, it becomes a participant in its destruction.

 2. The Silence: When Response is Weak
After Saul’s atrocities, time passed.
After Ahab’s crimes, the throne still stood.

Scripture:
Shall the throne of iniquity, which devises evil by law, have fellowship with You?
Delay is not denial.
Silence is not innocence.
‘’Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David inquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, “It is because of Saul and his bloodthirsty house, because he killed the Gibeonites.’’ 2 Samuel 21:1.
"They gather together against the life of the righteous,
And con demn innocent blood. Psalms 94:20-21.
Yoruba Wisdom: “Ìdákẹ́jẹ́ olórí ilú, ìparun ni fún ará ilú.” (The silence of a leader is the destruction of the people.)
Today: Statements are made—yet blood continues to flow.
Lesson:
3. The Reckoning: When Blood demands Payment.
In David’s time, famine came because of Saul’s bloodshed.
Scripture:
‘’So you shall not pollute the land where you are; for blood defiles the land, and no atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed on it,’’ land where you are; for blood defiles the land, and no atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed on it,’’
land where you are; for blood defiles the land, and no atonement can be made
for the land, for the blood that is shed on it,’’ Numbers 35:33.
‘’That innocent blood be shed in the midst of your land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and thus guilt of bloodshed be upon you’’. Deuteronomy 19:10.

Nigeria’s crises may not be ordinary—they may be consequences of unaddressed blood.
Yoruba Wisdom: “Ẹ̀jẹ̀ tí a bá ta lórí ilẹ̀, ilẹ̀ kì í gbàgbé.” (The earth never forgets the blood spilled on it.)

4. The Tragedy: When the next Generations pays.
Saul’s sons died.
“As for the man who consumed us and plotted against us, that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the territories of Israel, 6 let seven men of his descendants be delivered to us, and we will hang them before the LORD in Gibeah of Saul, whom the LORD chose.” 2 Samuel 21:5-6.

“He delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them on the hill before the LORD. So they fell, all seven together, and were put to death in the days of harvest,” 2 Samuel 21:9.

Ahab’s lineage was wiped out:“Now the king’s sons, seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who were rearing them. 7 So it was, when the letter came to them, that they took the king’s sons and slaughtered seventy persons, put their heads in baskets and sent them to him at Jezreel.” 2 Kings 10:6-7.

Scripture:“visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,” Exodus 20:5.

Lamentations” 5:7-9.''Our fathers sinned and are no more, but we bear their iniquities.
8 Servants rule over us; There is none to deliver us from their hand.
9 We get our bread at the risk of our lives, Because of the sword in the wilderness.'' 

While Scripture shows consequences flowing across generations, God also declares that every soul is accountable for its own response (Ezekiel 18:20). Therefore, cycles can be broken through repentance and righteousness.” 

Yoruba Wisdom: “Àkúnlẹ̀yàn ni í dá ìdílé rú.” (It is one’s deliberate choices that eventually bring trouble upon the family.)
Reality:
What leaders ignore today, a generation may suffer tomorrow.

5. The Prophetic Warning to Nigeria and to those in authority in this nation, including the present administration:
·         Blood is being shed.
·         Citizens are crying.
·         Heaven is watching.
The law is consistent and uncompromising
Scripture:
But let justice run down like water, And righteousness like a mighty stream. Amos 5:24.”
Yoruba Wisdom: “Ilé tí a fi ẹ̀jẹ̀ kọ́, ìparun ló máa parí rẹ̀.” (A house built on blood will end in destruction.)
Hear this: ·         Blood does not forget. Heaven does not ignore. Judgment does not expire.
6. The Call: Break the Cycle
This is a call to urgent action
Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow. Isaiah 1:17.
And what does the LORD require of you, But to do justly, To love mercy,And to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8.
Yoruba Wisdom: “Kíákíá l’ẹ̀fọ́ ń yọ; bí a kò bá gé e, yóò di igbo.” (If weeds are not cut early, they become a forest.)
Unchecked violence will grow beyond control.
Scripture:

Conclusion: The Law of Blood
Saul speaks.
Ahab warns.
Nigeria stands at a crossroads.
Scripture:
‘’Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.’’ Galatians 6:7.

Yoruba Wisdom: “Ọjọ́ tí ẹ̀jẹ̀ bá ń sunkún, kò sí ẹni tí yóò dá a dúró.” (When blood begins to cry, no one can silence it.)
Final Word:
Do not create a debt your children will inherit.
Do not build a house that will answer for your secrets.
In the economy of heaven, innocent blood is not forgotten—it is recorded as a debt, and righteousness is the only currency that can answer it.
A nation is not only judged by its leaders, but also by the silence of its people.
Scripture:
Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people. Proverbs 14:34

“Ohun tí a bá gbìn, ni a máa ká.” (What we sow is what we will reap.)
Because when blood speaks, it does not whisper—it cries. It does not negotiate—it demands.
