Nigeria: When Government Rejoices and the People Groan

This is a prophetic Call to Righteous Leadership especially in these times of Economic Strain
Proverbs 29:2: “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.”
Introduction:

Beloved, we are living in a time when celebration is loud—but relief is scarce.

A time when policies are announced—but the people are still adjusting to survive.

  •  Policies are shifting.
  • Economic structures are being reworked
  • Reforms are being announced and applauded.

Yet beyond all these, there is a deeper question:

Are the people rejoicing—or groaning?

And heaven is watching

Because heaven does not measure governance by activity but by impact on the people.
Yes, God does not measure leadership by policy announcements, but by the condition of the people.

1. God’s Standard of Governance
The Word of God establishes a timeless principle:

“He who rules over men must be just, Ruling in the fear of God. 2 Samuel 23:3.

And again:
“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice…” — Proverbs 29:2.
This is God’s benchmark:
• Righteous leadership → Shared rejoicing
• Unrighteous leadership → Widespread groaning

2. What Righteous Rejoicing looks like
Not all rejoicing in government is wrong.
There is a kind of celebration that heaven approves—when leaders rejoice because the people are well.
Consider: - King Solomon:
‘’Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking and rejoicing.’’ 1 Kings 4:20.

‘’And he had peace on every side all around him. 25 And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, each man under his vine and his fig tree,’’ 1 Kings 4:24-25.

Here, prosperity was not theoretical—it was experienced.
The king rejoiced, because the people were rejoicing.
When leadership is righteous, joy is not announced—it is felt.”

3. Rejoicing rooted in Restoration
Under King Hezekiah, when spiritual order was restored:
Then Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced that God had prepared the people, since the events took place so suddenly. 2 Chronicles 29:36.

This is divine order:
• Leadership aligns with God
• Systems are corrected
• The people experience relief
And then—everyone rejoices.

4. Joy built on Justice
When Nehemiah led the rebuilding:
“The joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.” — Nehemiah 12:43
But that joy came after something crucial:
In Nehemiah 5, Nehemiah confronted economic injustice—He stopped exploitation among the people.

True national joy is built on justice, not just development.

But what happens when this divine pattern is broken?

5. When the Pattern is Broken
Now contrast this with a different reality.
There are times when:
• Policies are celebrated
• Reforms are praised
• Leadership speaks of progress
Yet the people are under pressure:
• Cost of living rises
• Daily survival becomes harder
• Effort yields less reward
When the cost of movement rises, when food becomes a calculation, when income no longer matches effort—these are not just economic signals, they are spiritual indicators.

This is where Scripture speaks again:
“Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees… to turn aside the needy from judgment.” — Isaiah 10:1–2.
When policies are applauded but people are afflicted, something is wrong.

6. God hears the Groaning
The groaning of the people is not invisible.
“For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise,” says the Lord. Psalms 12:5.

Every:
• Strained household
• Silent suffering
• Economic burden.
Is heard in heaven!

Scripture does not leave us without warning—history speaks.

7. A warning from History: Consider King Ahab; Power was intact; The system functioned.

But when Naboth was oppressed: Have you murdered and also taken possession?” 1 Kings 21:19.

The palace was calm, but judgment had begun.
A system can function efficiently and still be judged righteously.

Now let us bring this closer to everyday reality.

8. When Economic Pressure becomes Spiritual Concern

Scripture does not ignore economic realities:
Indeed, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. 5 You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter James 5:4-5.

When:
• Labour is devalued
• Burdens increase without relief
• Survival becomes harder
God does not call it reform—He calls it something to be examined.

9. The Danger of not listening
Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor will also cry himself and not be heard. Proverbs 21:13.

When leadership stops listening, heaven starts responding.
A deaf throne invites a speaking heaven.

10. The cry that reaches God
“…and their cry came up unto Go .. and God heard their groaning.'' Exodus 2:23-24.

Groaning is not rebellion.
It is a signal.
And when it persists—God intervenes.

11. God’s requirement Remains

He has shown you, O man, what is good;
And what does the LORD require of you
But to do justly,
To love mercy,
And to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8.

Not just:
• Strong policies
• Bold reforms
But:
• Justice
• Mercy
• Humility

12. Righteousness is the Foundation
“Righteousness exalts a nation…” — Proverbs 14:34.
Without righteousness:
• Reforms strain the people
• Systems lose balance
• Progress becomes uneven

13. A Word to Leaders
Open your mouth, judge righteously,
And plead the cause of the poor and needy. Proverbs 31:9.

Leadership must ensure that:
• Burdens are not one-sided
• Relief is intentional
• People are not forgotten in policy

14. A Word to the People
If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land 2 Chronicles 7:14.
Remain: •Spiritually alert
• Morally grounded
• Hopeful in God

And heaven is watching

Warning:
“The Lord will enter into judgment… for ye have eaten up the vineyard.” — Isaiah 3:14.
When:
• Leaders rejoice alone
• People groan continually
“God does not merely notice—He responds.”

A deaf throne invites a speaking heaven

Conclusion:
We have now seen both patterns:
• Under Solomon, Hezekiah, Nehemiah → rejoicing was shared
• Under unjust systems → groaning prevailed
So, the question is no longer abstract:
Who is rejoicing today?
“God is not against a rejoicing government—He is against a government that rejoices alone.”

Finally:
If leadership celebrates, but the people are strained…
If progress is announced, but relief is absent.
Then the equation of heaven is not yet fulfilled
Until righteousness, justice, and mercy return:
“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice.”

Until righteousness returns to leadership, rejoicing will not return to the people.

“Shared joy is the signature of righteous leadership.”
“When only leaders celebrate, heaven investigates.”
“Justice is the foundation of national joy.”
“God hears the economy through the cries of the people.”
