NIGERIA: King David’s “House of Commotion” and the Political Ruling Elite

The story of King David is not merely ancient history: it is a prophetic mirror reflecting modern society. David rose to power, gained influence, and secured national victories, yet his private household became a theater of rivalry, betrayal, and bloodshed. Scripture affirms this pattern:
• He who troubles his own house will inherit the wind, Proverbs 11:29.
Yoruba Proverb: Ilé tí a kò kọ́ dáadáa, yóò ṣubú ní ìparí.” — A house that is not properly built will eventually collapse.
The tension between public success and private disorder remains painfully visible in Nigeria today.

1. Power without Order Creates a Dangerous Legacy
Many political figures in Nigeria spend decades building wealth, acquiring properties, and securing influence. Yet, where fairness, transparency, and order are absent, what should be a blessing, becomes a curse.

• Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights’’ James 1:17.
This reminds us that every good gift should reflect divine order.

• “Woe to him who covets evil gain for his house, that he may set his nest on high,
That he may be delivered from the power of disaster!
10 You give shameful counsel to your house, Cutting off many peoples, And sin against your soul.
11 For the stone will cry out from the wall, And the beam from the timbers will answer it. Habakkuk 2:9-11

The tragic tales surrounding the so-called “Houses of Commotion” among the Political Ruling Elite (PRE) and Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs) are often carefully concealed while they are alive. Yet, the moment life departs, the veil of control is lifted—what was once discreetly managed erupts into full-blown internal crises and global headlines.

Yoruba Proverb: “Àkúnlẹ̀yàn ni í dá ìdílé rú.”— “It is one’s deliberate choices or actions that eventually bring trouble upon the family.”

Like David’s house, the issue is not wealth itself, but the failure to govern it with justice and clarity.

“Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished, but he who gathers by labour will increase.” Proverbs 13:112.

The Crisis of Inheritance: Wealth without Wisdom:
Across Nigeria, the pattern is painfully familiar:
• Vast estates, companies, and fortunes are accumulated
• Upon death, disputes erupt among heirs

This reflects Scripture:
“Then I hated all my labor in which I had toiled under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who will come after me. 19 And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will rule over all my labor in which I toiled and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.” Ecclesiastes 2:18-19.

The consequences are severe:
• Endless court battles
• Family fragmentation
• Even violence within bloodlines
This mirrors David’s household:
• 2 Samuel 13–18 — Amnon, Tamar, Absalom, and Adonijah all reveal a house overtaken by conflict
Yoruba Proverb: “Omo tí a kò kọ́, ni yóò gbé ilé tí a kọ́ tà” — the child not properly trained will sell the house that was built.

3. The Root Problem: Neglect of Justice and Discipline
David’s failure was not only moral but disciplinary.
• 1 Kings 1:6 – Adonijah exalted himself because his father never restrained him
Likewise, many leaders today:
• Ignore wrongdoing within their families
• Allow rivalry and entitlement to grow
• Avoid transparent inheritance planning
• Convert public office into private gain
Scripture warns:
• Proverbs 22:6 – Train up a child in the way he should go
• 1 Timothy 5:8 – A man must responsibly provide for and guide his household
Yoruba Proverb: “Bi a kò bá kọ́ ọmọ, a kọ́ ilé” — Failure to train a child is failure to build a home.

4. Wealth Can Become a Weapon Instead of blessing, inherited wealth can become an instrument of destruction:
• Turning siblings into enemies
• Destroying unity
• Fueling litigation and violence

''He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, but he who hates bribes will live''.

David’s household became a battlefield because privilege was not guided by righteousness.

The tragedy of David’s house reveals an eternal truth:

Many powerful Nigerians build wealth but fail to build order. When they die, children fight, sue one another, and sometimes even kill over inheritance.
This mirrors the tragedy in the house of King David.

Lessons:
Wealth without discipline brings chaos.
Inheritance without fairness causes war.
Leadership without moral structure destroys families.
Bottom line:
Don’t just leave property; leave peace.
